About This Game

Brave Earth: Prologue is a challenging and engaging action platformer presented in an 8-bit NES style. Although heavily inspired by classics like Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden, the game strikes a unique balance between methodical, high-risk gameplay and aggressive, fast-paced action. Its beautiful, handcrafted levels feature meticulously placed challenges intended to engage players rather than merely frustrate them.

Experience a story spanning three characters, each with unique paths and playstyles. Naomi vos Cruz is a young knight sent on a simple courier mission that spirals out of control, leading her to battle monsters and mercenaries to stop a demonic cult ritual; she relies on special attacks due to limited mobility. Sinlen Rothschild, Naomi's best friend, is a mobile mage ambushed while investigating ancient ruins, utilizing a wide variety of long-range magic to defend herself. Trevor vos Cruz, Naomi's older brother and a Master Hunter for The Church, is slow to attack with his giant sword Verbanner but excels at quick, evasive maneuvers.

The game boasts over a dozen richly detailed levels, intense boss fights, beautiful cutscene art by Neolucky, and a VRC6 soundtrack composed by Necrophageon with additional tracks by SK Ultra. It also includes tons of optional lore that does not distract from the core storyline. What started as a freeware study project by Kayin (creator of I Wanna Be the Guy) evolved into a full retail game that builds upon classic platformer design with modern sensibilities. Publisher Dan Stern of Dangen Entertainment commends the game's meticulous encounter design and Kayin's enviable understanding of player psychology, creating a masterpiece of 8-bit design that offers satisfying challenges without relying on cheap tricks.
